About The Committee for Water Safety & Awareness
Our community has always had children and adults drown in our
waterways. Now we have the issues of the Kayak Course and the ongoing
issues of The Fountain Creek, Runyon Lakes, The Arkansas River, The
Pueblo Reservoir, The St. Charles Mesa and Bessemer Ditches. The
Committee for Water Safety and Awareness was established in June of
2006 to work within our community to educate our youth about the dangers
of our waterways with the goal of saving our children's lives. We are also
educating our community about water conservation and water pollution.
The Committee for Water Safety & Awareness has implemented the
American Red Cross’s Longfellow Whale Tales Program into the public
elementary school system through private contributions. We hope to get this
valuable water safety program into all local children’s organizations. We
have distributed over water safety fliers through out our community . We
coordinate and participate in water safety & awareness presentations,
where we discuss our water ways and the dangers there of. We also
discuss water conservation, pollution and what we can do to keep our water
clean, reaching thousands of children.
CWSA has concerned citizens that have donated many hours in trying to
help us in achieving our goals. We also have a volunteer Board of Directors
who are 100% supportive of our commitment & our mission, as well as
financially supportive. We have attended City Safety Meetings in hopes of
helping to make our waterways safer for our community. We hold meetings
to discuss current issues as well as innovative new approaches to water
safety and awareness education.
In the future, we plan to pay for children to take swimming lessons & swim
in supervised areas. This will be an ongoing program serving the purpose of
saving lives as well as encouraging our youth to be more physically fit by
learning to swim. Providing supervised swimming areas is the most
effective way to save children from drowning in unsafe waterways. We hope
to work with School District 60 to get younger children into the high school’s
swimming pools, having older students that are taking life guard classes,
give swimming lessons to the younger children. With the success of this
program, we hope to branch out to other schools. These are ongoing
projects. If you have found the information on our web page useful and would
